TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN —

Chios Police, The Mayor of Chios, Elpida Tsouri (Chios MP), Kostis Mousouroulis (Chios MP), Minister Michalis Chrysohoidis (Minister responsible for the Police Service), Minister Michalis Karximakis (Minister responsible for drafting new legislation on agricultural chemicals), Vasilis Agiannidis (CAWS, Chios), Lucy Westmore GAWF.

I am very unhappy to learn that in Chios, someone has been poisoning stray animals such as dogs, using poisoned meat.
Poisoning is cruel, excruciatingly painful and unnecessary, it is rightly illegal and a crime under Greek law.  I think it is very suspicious that many dead dogs have been found near to the Town Hall.

The police should fully investigate poisoning incidents and prosecute those responsible, in accordance with the law, whenever possible.

The Greek Ministry of Agricultural Development should put in place measures to control the availability of poisonous agro-chemicals (such as rat poison) and to make either obtaining or using them for purposes other than that for which they are intended, an offence.

I used to think that Greece was a civilized country but when this kind of thing happens, I start to question that belief.

People in UK care deeply about animals (and so should you) and we will not continue to visit your country if this is how you treat animals.

Please use your power and authority to stop the poisoning of dogs in Chios. Poisoning is illegal and horribly cruel, offensive to all civilised people and degrading to Greece in the eyes of the world. The police should fully investigate poisoning incidents and prosecute those responsible, in accordance with the law. Chios Council should act according to the provisions of Greek law and shoulder its responsibilities towards stray dogs.

I was absolutely horrified to hear of the poisoning of the sray dogs in Chios.  These dogs had collars on and had been neutered and looked after by the local people.  Poisoning is cruel, excruciatingly painful and unnecessary, rightly illegal and a crime under Greek law.  This is a terrible way to treat your stray animals, especially when people are trying to help them.

– The police should fully investigate poisoning incidents and prosecute those responsible, in accordance with the law, whenever possible, as it is a crime after all.

– Chios Council should act according to the provisions of Greek law and shoulder its responsibilities towards stray dogs.

– The Greek Ministry of Agricultural Development should put in place measures to control the availability of poisonous agro-chemicals (such as rat poison) and to make either obtaining or using them for purposes other than that for which they are intended, an offence.

Unfortunately although I love Greece but I no longer feel able to travel to your country at the moment due to the stories I have heard from my friends who have returned very upset about the way your stray animals are killed so inhumanely.  Iit should be possible to work with the animal charities available to be able to deal with the problem of strays, after all it is all down to the humans who have abandoned them in the first place.

Please, please, find a solution to help the strays and not just destroy them so inhumanely.

Yours sincerely

Margaret Woodall

Please take the appropriate action to end animal suffering and poisoning. It is cruel. Owned pets can even die and children can be exposed.
