Την άμεση αλληλεγγύη του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου προς τους πληγέντες και τη στήριξή του για την αποκατάσταση των τεράστιων ζημιών από τις καταστροφικές πυρκαγιές του καλοκαιριού ζήτησε σήμερα με επιστολή του προς τον Πρόεδρο του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου κ. Χανς Γκερτ Πέτερινγκ ο Επικεφαλής των Ευρωβουλευτών του ΠΑ.ΣΟ.Κ. κ. Σταύρος Λαμπρινίδης. Ο κ. Λαμπρινίδης ενημέρωσε επίσης τηλεφωνικά εχθές τον κ. Πέτερινγκ και τον πρόεδρο της Σοσιαλιστικής Ομάδας στο ΕΚ κ. Μάρτιν Σούλτζ για τις εξελίξεις.
Στην επιστολή του, την οποία κοινοποίησε στους προέδρους όλων των Πολιτικών Ομάδων του Ευρωκοινοβουλίου, ο κ. Λαμπρινίδης ζητάει από τον κ. Πέτερινγκ να ληφθούν άμεσα 5 μέτρα για τη στήριξη της Ελλάδας και των πληγέντων:
1. Το Κοινοβούλιο να ζητήσει την ίδρυση μίας αυτόνομης ευρωπαϊκής Ομάδας Ταχείας Επέμβασης που να συνδράμει τις εθνικές αρχές σε περιπτώσεις ανεξέλεγκτων πυρκαγιών κι άλλων αντίστοιχου μεγέθους φυσικών καταστροφών, ώστε να μην περιορίζεται η ευρωπαϊκή βοήθεια στις εθελοντικές προσφορές χωρών, που συχνά αντιμετωπίζουν αντίστοιχα προβλήματα και δε διαθέτουν επαρκή μέσα.
2. Να απαιτήσει από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή να κινητοποιήσει άμεσα το Ταμείο Αλληλεγγύης για την αποκατάσταση των ζημιών στην Ελλάδα, χωρίς γραφειοκρατικές κωλυσιεργίες.
3. Να στείλει μία αντιπροσωπεία του ΕΚ στην Ελλάδα προκειμένου να διαπιστώσει από κοντά τις καταστροφές, να συμπαρασταθεί στους πληγέντες αλλά και να αντλήσει τα απαραίτητα συμπεράσματα από τα προβλήματα στην πρόληψη και κατάσβεση των πυρκαγιών για την αποτελεσματικότερη αντιμετώπιση αντίστοιχων πυρκαγιών σε κράτη-μέλη της ΕΕ στο μέλλον.
Επιπλέον, ο κ. Λαμπρινίδης ζήτησε από τον κ. Πέτερινγκ:
4. Να τηρηθεί ενός λεπτού σιγή στην έναρξη της επόμενης Ολομέλειας του ΕΚ στη μνήμη όλων των αδικοχαμένων, πολιτών και πυροσβεστών.
5. Να αναγνωριστεί δημόσια από το ΕΚ η προσφορά βοήθειας όλων των ευρωπαϊκών χωρών που προσέφεραν πυροσβεστικά αεροπλάνα και άλλα μέσα πυρόσβεσης.

Mr. Hans Gert Poettering
Dear Mr. President,
Following our telephone conversation of this morning, by this letter I wish to inform you in writing as well of the devastating fires that have engulfed large areas of Greece and to ask for the European Parliament’s immediate solidarity towards the people and the natural environment of my country that are suffering under the fires’ destructive effects.
As you undoubtedly know, a few weeks ago, large forest areas on Mount Parnitha in Athens and in adjacent areas were obliterated by fires, creating an environmental catastrophe of enormous proportions in the Attika region but also in other regions of Greece, such as in Corinth, Crete and elsewhere, where similar fires broke out. As this were not enough, this past week Greece was hit by a series of vastly more devastating fires, engulfing the Peloponnese, Evoia Island, and Western and Northern Greece.
As a result of these fires, more than 55 people, by today’s count, have lost their lives and hundreds of thousands of pristine acres of forest, agricultural land and villages have been totally destroyed.
Given the above, I urge, Mr. President, for your favourable consideration of the following:
1. That a minute of silence be observed during the opening Session of the Strasbourg Plenary on Monday, 3 September, in the memory of all those who lost their lives in the Greek fires and in all fires throughout Europe this summer.
2. That the Parliament officially thank all EU Governments who immediately responded to the plea of Commissioner Dimas to send fire-fighting aircraft and other help to Greece in its hour of need, pursuant to the activation of the Commission’s civil protection mechanism for such emergencies.
3. That the Parliament propose to Commission and Council the creation of an independent European Rapid Reaction Force for cases of extraordinary fires (such as the current ones in Greece) and of other natural disasters of similar scale, to be mobilized immediately in the aid of national authorities during such crises, as the voluntary help coming from other EU countries cannot suffice, given that they too, frequently, face emergencies that require their limited forces to be on alert locally. The cost of such a rapid reaction mechanism, in staff and equipment, would be minimal compared to the devastation to Europe’s citizens and environment that the EU would likely be able to help prevent.
4. That the Parliament, pursuant to earlier Resolutions on the matter, send a strong plea to the Commission to apply the Solidarity Fund to help restore the huge damage to Greece’s (and, by extension, Europe’s) natural heritage in a swift and decisive manner, utilizing all flexibility in its disposal, and to overcome all potential bureaucratic and other obstacles to this effect.
5. Finally, that the issue be placed on the Agenda of the next Conference of Presidents and that, pursuant as well to last year’s Resolution on Natural Disasters in Europe, a European Parliament delegation visit Greece in the immediate future to observe the damage inflicted up close, to extend its solidarity to all those who have felt the effects of the fires, and to draw any lessons fοr the better preparedness and effectiveness of the fire-fighting and prevention measures against similar disasters throughout Europe in the future.
Mr. President, I am confident that, given your great sensitivity in these matters, you will react positively to the above proposals.
