Let me begin by wishing all of you health and peace for the holy days of Christmas and the new year. I apologize for writing this email in English. My email does not transfer Hellenic fonts.
My name is Katerina Karga. Born in Chios, I have been living in Montreal, Canada for several years, having completed my undergraduate and graduate studies here. I am in Chios at least once per year, spending my summers in my native home.
I have heard many times from Hellenes living in Ellas that Ellas is loved most by those Hellenes who live abroad. It is very true. You have to lose something before you realize what its value is.
The events of the last few weeks in Athens and other parts of our country are extremely troubling. Why would the birthplace of democracy see such undemocratic acts? How is allowing anarchists to destroy the property of the state as well as private property democratic? What kind of message are we sending the citizens of our country when we tell them that police officers who are hired to protect us are not even allowed to protect themselves? How can we claim to be a democratic society when we judge a man before he has been tried in a fair trail?
In Canada, police officers are well-paid for two reasons. First, because the government and society needs to keep them honest. And second, because when the time comes for them to put their lives on the line to defend the interests of justice and to protect citizens, they must do so. What exactly do Hellenes expect of their police officers? From where I stand, our police men and women are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.
Why has the most beautiful country in the world disintegrated to the point where respect for others (including their property) is valueless and where discipline and authority are negative words? Why does the media take every opportunity to blast authority and discipline? No society can survive without these basic principles and values.
I am not blue, green, red or any other colour. Consequently, I have no allegiances to any political party or movement. All governments for as long as I can remember have been corrupt and all will be in the future. Anarchy will not solve that nor will darkening the name of Ellas in international media. Elections exist to ensure that civilized people have the right to speak and choose their leaders. What we see in Ellas is not civilized people but animals set for destruction. NOTHING can justify their activities. At the same time, however, the government would be criticized by the irresponsible national media if action were taken to put an end to these lawless activities once and for all. So, where is the justice for the quiet majority that is composed of law-abiding citizens who work, raise their families and are interested in peaceful holidays?
Can someone finally explain to us what the purpose of all these anarchist attacks are and who is behind them?
Katerina Karga
